Lyra's Spring Piano Recital
Bill missed the first song but here is Lyra's second song, "Money Can't Buy Everything" AKA "Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay." She did a great job!

Cutest cotillion ever!
Lyras's been dying to dance all of cotillion season and she is finally getting a chance! Will has really looked after her all evening. He took her under his wing during the class dinner and shared his very enormous dessert with her. I think the girls in his grade might be impressed.

Return of the Catfish
We bought this catfish when he was teeny. His disappeared for years and we assumed he was dead, but really he was just down in the bottom of the pond GROWING. He is now the largest thing in the pond by far.
This fish generated all kinds of amusing discussion on our neighborhood listserv when I posted an inquiry about what catfish eat (we have no more tadpoles) and whether anyone wanted to adopt him. The crazy "Jaws Cat" photo and "catfish platter" are from that listserv discussion. I made this video to show off the fish and didn't think it would be complete without those photos. Thank you, Wayne!
So can anyone tell what kind of catfish this is? I don't want to release him into the wild unless he's a native species. Anyone want to adopt him? Please? I know catfish can be yummy but I don't want to eat him. I mean, look at him! EEEEEWWW! I don't even want my cat to eat him.

Camp Life - Hansel and Gretel
Eva's class put on a play for the parents last weekend. It was a poetic version of Hansel and Gretel and it was very cute! I had to edit waaaaay down to get it short enough for even family and friends to watch. It ends with Free to Be You and Me. Anyone who went to Orange Hunt with me will remember singing this in music class. Turns out that I still know the words!
Camp Life - Diving
Camp Arcadia's lake is Pleasant Lake and it really and truly is pleasant! There is a dock shaped like an H and the girls have lanes roped off there for swimming and there is a diving board. Eva learned how to do a regular racing dive which is GREAT because she didn't know how to do that at the beginning of the summer. She was working on her side dive and is hoping to learn a back dive by the end of the summer. It was very difficult to capture this on the teeny weeny Flip but I did my best.
Camp Life - The Horse Show
Bill and I spent last weekend visiting Eva at Camp Arcadia. She is having a fantastic summer and we enjoyed meeting all of her friends and counselors and seeing the different things at camp that she likes to do. Bill took care of all the still photographs (which is why I don't have any) and I shot a bit of video. Here's a short clip of the horse show. I don't really know anything about riding horses except that you couldn't pay me to wear those tan stretch pants. Additional video is coming!

Lyra Learns to Swim
Here is Lyra at the end of her second week of swimming lessons and it's going really well! This is much better than last year's experience at the pool. Lyra is learning to swim for the wall, flip to her back to rest and float, and then flip back to swim. And this from a girl who, two weeks ago, refused to put her face in the water. Kudos to Miss Sarah!
Sorry the video is a bit long. I personally do not have the patience to sit through videos at all but this is cute and the length of the video actually matches the song (that never happens!)

Alexandria Children's Chorus - Ten Years in Harmony
We attended a very special concert today. Will sings in the Alexandria Choral Society's Children's Chorus. Today the Children's Chorus presented their 10th Anniversary Concert, "Ten Years in Harmony". This year, the Chorus introduced a new program, a composition contest for young composers. For the contest, Eva submitted a short song she made up for our family to sing as a grace before meals. Eva's song won the composition contest, so she was honored at the concert, and the Chorus performed her song.
I enjoyed the selection of songs performed, and I thought the Chorus Director, Mr. Carr, did a wonderful job conducting (I really enjoy watching conductors). This video was a quick edit job, trying to condense an hour+ concert. I reduced it to about six minutes, but that is still long by internet standard. This is an HD video, so if you play it full size (or full screen) it should look good. I have taken still photos of many of Will's concerts over the last three years, and this is a situation where video is MUCH BETTER.
You will see (and unfortunately hear) fans in almost every video clip. It was 90 degrees in Alexandria yesterday, and the air conditioning in the church where the concert was held had not yet been turned on for the season. It was very hot and sticky.
The video is also posted at Vimeo here which in my experience provides higher quality HD video streaming than FaceBook.

Video - Junior Indoor Bouldering Series #JIBS
http://www.deadpointmag.com/videos/watch/junior-bouldering-invitationals-2010 Eva does not appear in this short video (link above), but she she did
compete in the JIBS competition at the Philly Rock Gym (PRG) last
Saturday where the video was taken. We did not stay for finals (it
would have been a very long day and overnight stay in Philly) but from
the video it looks like they were great. If you have never seen
indoor rock climbing, the video provides a quick sense of the sport.

Lyra's First Ski Lesson
Both of our older kids learned to ski starting around the age of four, and both learned at Wisp Resort in Maryland. Lyra knew she was old enough this year, and has been lobbying for her turn. With the older kids' activities, things are hectic, but Lyra deserved her time at the slopes (and if all of the kids ski, Dad will have someone to ski with while Mom is at the beach).
The snow was fantastic. I usually need to get on a plane to see these conditions. Wisp has had 44" of powder this week, and 20 FEET of snow this year. This is in Maryland, not California or Colorado!
Lyra spent most of her day at Willy Wisp (little kids ski school) but I took her to the top for one run. She has had enough of a taste of skiing to know she wants more next year. Personally I wish we had gone for the whole weekend, not just a day.

Blizzard of 2010 - The Day After Video (First Try at Vimeo)
This video was taken on Sunday February 7th, the day after our big snow on the 6th. The day was beautiful, and later in the afternoon I was able to make it to the airport for my flight to Melbourne where it was warm and there was NO snow. Cathleen and the kids stayed in Alexandria where it snowed again Wednesday and school was closed for the week. I arrived back home yesterday to three feet of snow, the gutter torn off the house and branches broken off many of the large bushes in our back yard.
This was shot on a Canon 7D and edited in iMovie 9.0. I am learning iMovie and liking it more, though like all things Mac I wish I could see more of what is happening behind the curtain. I published on Vimeo because it seems like videos posted there stream in higher quality than YouTube, at least it appears that way.
I am reworking the video I took during the storm on Saturday, but I can't find (non copyright) music I like. I am not sure what music goes with a wailing blizzard. I published a rough draft version to YouTube using Surfin' Safari as the backing track, but received a copyright warning. I am torn between a perky contrasting surf track or a dark and foreboding piece more evocative of a blizzard.

Another video! From Will's recital...
Will played a Sonata by Scarlatti and this jazzy little modern piece called "Bright Orange" by Robert Starer. He wasn't happy with his Scarlatti performance but Bright Orange turned out quite well so here it is. It is short and sweet!

Six Flags Roller Coaster Photos
Will and I made a short pilgrimage to Six Flags Great America today, to use the season passes we were levered into purchasing on our last visit. I have to say that with Six Flags only 30min from our house, and practically no lines because it is off season, this is an easy ~3hr excursion.
On the last trip I used my iPhone to take some photos. This time I used my Canon G10 configured for 'point and shoot' (preset focus and aperture set for maximum depth of field). This worked great and all the photos were good from a focus and exposure perspective. However, the composition was not up to my mental aspiration. I had the camera strap threaded through my belt so if the camera flew out of my hands on a roller coaster it would not go anywhere. Unfortunately this meant I could only get the camera about a foot from my body, and there were some great shots I missed because I could not hold the camera over my head. I also need to back the shutter speed off a little to show more of the motion in some of the shots. Oh well, we do have season passes, and they are open Saturdays and Sundays through 11/1.
Because the lines were so short (almost non-existent) we were able to get the front seats in the front car on most of our rides. I have to say, this is eerie, especially on Super Man, which is the highest roller coaster at Six Flags. As Will put it, when you start down the main hill, it feels 'more than straight down'. Because I could not get the camera high enough, I could not effectively capture the sensation of vertical drop, but in the front car with nothing at all in front of you it was intense. This video on YouTube gives a pretty good sense of what the ride is like in the front car.

Piano Debut
This weekend was Will's first recital with Mr. Solero. It was a Concerto concert and was a lot more fun to listen to than what I recall from my piano recital past. Will's teacher, Mr. Solero, played the second piano part for each student and I think even he had a lot of work to do to get ready.
Will played Concertino in C Major by Robert D. Vandall. The video includes portions of his piece and also features part of a performance by his friend, Eric. I cannot remember the name of the piece Eric played but it was beautiful. Lyra *looks* like she iss being a perfect angel but if you pay attention, you can hear her Thunk Thunk Thunk-ing her Hello Kitty watch against the metal chair. I ended up taking her downstairs to the reception area and it turned out that is the place where all the wiggly ones go. Enjoy!

Snow Day
A couple of people have said they couldn't load the prior version of this video. That one is on Facebook. I am not sure why that one isnt working since it always has before. This one is on Blogger. Maybe this will work? It is a smaller window though so I don't like it quite as much. Plus it is nice just to have to put the video in One Place and I know some people look at my Facebook page and not my blog....can you believe it??? :)
